How to Create a QR Code for Free
Making the code takes about twenty seconds. Making one that still works on a printed menu two years from now takes about two minutes more. Here is both.
The three steps
- Pick what the code should hold — a link, a Wi-Fi network, a phone number, a contact card.
- Type it in. The code redraws as you type; there is no Generate button to press.
- Download it. PNG for screens and quick jobs, SVG when it is going to a printer.
No account, no email, no watermark. The code is built inside your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Four things to check before you print
- Scan it yourself first. With the phone you expect other people to use, from the distance they will use it. This catches more problems than every other check combined.
- Give it room. A QR code needs a blank margin of four modules on every side. The standard calls this the quiet zone, and a code pushed hard against a photo or a border often will not read.
- Keep the contrast strong. Dark code on a light background. Not light on dark, not two mid-tones, not a code sitting on a busy photograph.
- Make it big enough. The working rule is scan distance divided by ten: read from 30 cm, print at 3 cm.
Static versus dynamic — the choice nobody explains
Most QR sites hand you a dynamic code: the code points at their server, and their server forwards visitors to your link. It is convenient, because you can change the destination later and see how many people scanned. It also means your printed code stops working the day the subscription lapses, the free trial ends, or the company shuts down.
The codes here are static. The address is encoded inside the drawing itself, so the code depends on nobody — not even on this site. The trade-off is real and worth stating plainly: you cannot change where it points after printing, and there are no scan statistics. If you need to change the destination later, point the code at a page you control and change that page instead.
If you are printing a thousand of anything — menus, cards, labels, signs — print two or three first and scan them. Paper, ink and finish all change how a code reads.
