How Small Can a QR Code Be?
About 2 cm for a short link on ordinary print. But the number that decides it is not the width of the code — it is the width of one square inside it.
Count modules, not millimetres
A QR code is a grid of squares called modules. The smallest possible grid is 21×21; the largest is 177×177. Add the four-module quiet zone on each side and a short link typically lands around 33 modules across in total.
Reliable printing needs each module to be roughly 0.5 mm. Multiply: 33 × 0.5 mm ≈ 17 mm. That is the honest floor for a short link — call it 2 cm with a margin for reality.
What fails first
- Ink spread. Below about 0.4 mm the dark modules bleed into the light gaps and the pattern turns to mush.
- Camera focus. Most phones cannot focus closer than 8–10 cm. A tiny code forces the reader closer than the lens can cope with, and the image never sharpens.
- Hand shake. The smaller the code, the less forgiving it is of a phone that is not quite still.
- The quiet zone. On a small code the margin is small in absolute terms, so any encroaching artwork does proportionally more damage.
How to make a small code work
- Shorten the content. A 20-character link may fit in 21×21; a 60-character one will not.
- Drop the centre logo. It forces the error-correction level up, which adds modules.
- Use error correction M, not H, unless something is covering part of the code.
- Print vector, on smooth coated stock, in solid black.
- Test on the cheapest phone you can find, not the newest.
Micro QR codes exist and go smaller still, but phone cameras read them inconsistently. For anything the public will scan, stay with a standard QR code.
